What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture uses thin-hairlike needles to help balance out the body. "Ouch, I hate needles!" you might be thinking. Yes, we all grew up knowing needles to hurt and dreading shots. The good news is, acupuncture doesn't really hurt and feels nothing like getting a shot. The thin-hairlike needles are inserted gently and most patients barely feel a thing. Patients actually tell us they feel more relaxed when the needles go in. It's not uncommon to take a refreshing nap. If you're still curious about what you might feel during a treatment, here is a great article that explains it.

Cupping
Cupping is like a reverse massage. Instead of applying pressure to the area, cupping pulls up. The skin is gently drawn into the cups, which creates a suction. The cups may stay stationary for 5-15 minutes or we may slide them around, which is a technique called sliding cupping. It feels surprisingly good and relaxing and is not painful. Cupping helps treat pain, muscle knots, and tension. It is also a good tool to loosen phlegm in the lungs and helps improve overall circulation. Cupping can sometimes result in temporarily discoloration of the skin known as petechiae. The marks will naturally dissipate within 3-10 days.

Moxibustion
Moxa is a dried plant that is used to warm and stimulate acupuncture points, in a process called moxibustion. The Chinese have used this technique for thousands of years. Our patients love this and tell us their whole body warms up and express how soothing it feels… Perfect for Portland's rainy days. It's used to stimulate circulation, fatigue, some types of infertility and digestive disorders. Moxibustion is also known to stimulate a breech baby and cause it to turn.

Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbs can be an important part of the healing process, aside from acupuncture. They are mostly made from plant products and a formula will usually consist of 5-15 herbs. The herbs not only assist the acupuncture treatment, but can also add supplementation that the body is lacking. Formulas come in the form of patents (pills), tinctures, granules, and bulk. These are prepared according to strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and subject to high levels of quality control.
